ICC delivers hope by reconstructing smiles during ICC Smile week

The ICC Buying group, together with The Smile Foundation and the surgical team at George Mukhari Academic Hospital (DGMAH) in Ga-Rankuwa, have once again delivered hope to a group of mothers whose children suffer from various facial conditions such as cleft lips and cleft palates. This was made possible from funds raised at ICC's Golf day earlier this year that enabled a team of facial reconstructive surgeons to change the lives of 20 children. This annual ICC Smile week was held at the Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital in Ga-Rankuwa, North of Pretoria from the 14th to the 18th September 2015.

During the ICC Smile week, a group of ICC's representatives and partners were fortunate enough to witness one of these life changing reconstructive surgeries. This was performed on eight month old Gosiame for the treatment of both a cleft palate and cleft lip, one of the most severe cases that Professor Tim Christofides from Wits University, and his team had dealt with at the Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital. "Cleft lips and cleft palates are a result of the tissues of the lips and the roof of the palate not joining completely during the early weeks of pregnancy" stated Professor Allandale, while briefing the ICC group before they entered into theatre to witness the surgery.

Martha, Gosiame's mother had the following to say just before her son went in for the surgery: "I am very nervous for my son, but I know he will have a better life after this and he will be able to swallow his food and keep it in. Feeding him has been very hard but at least now we have received the help we have been looking for".

The Smile Foundation is a non-profit organization led by Executive Director Hedley Lewis. "This week is about more than just performing reconstructive surgeries on these children, it's about giving families hope and ensuring that their children have a fair chance at a normal life."

Gert Scheepers, CEO of The ICC Buying Group was once again moved by the experience. "We have and will continue to be a firm supporter of The Smile Foundation and are grateful that we can help change the lives of around 20 children per year." The team also gave out teddy bears, backpacks, lunch boxes, juice bottles and balloons during the week, assisting in giving the children even bigger smiles.

The ICC Buying group and its members are very grateful to have played such a vital role in changing lives and in being an agent of delivering hope to mothers and children in need.
